It is the story of an Australian couple Tom and Isabelle Sherbourne who take a job as lighthouse keepers on remote and isolated Janus Rock which is one half day’s journey seaward from the coast. The supply boat comes once a season and leave is granted every other year at best.
The childless couple rescues a baby in a boat that has washed up onshore. The boat also carries a dead man. They claim the baby and name her Lucy without reporting the incident. They move back to the mainland when Lucy is two and deal with the consequences of their decision.
The publisher said in a review that the story is “exquisite and unforgettable, a deeply moving novel.”
Another reviewer said that this story “explores desperation, morality and considers the damaging way in which we store our private sorrows and the consequences of these terrible secrets.”
