This morning I spent picking up yard signs with Carter and thinking about all the many people who helped the campaign be a great success, and you are one of them. We still have a journey ahead, but last night was a major victory, we won the primary with 68% of the vote, and I have you all to thank for that. There were thousands of postcards and hand written notes mailed, thousands of phone calls made and doors knocked, 150 yard signs delivered, numerous letters to the editor, I can’t tell you how many emails and social media posts went out and neighbors talking to neighbors. We saw record turnout in our district and across the state of Montana. To sound cliché, it was a beautiful thing, and again, I thank you.
In many ways, our world is not in a good place right now, between deep anger at continuous social injustice (murder) and COVID, just to name two, we ALL must understand that political apathy will get us to a worse place yet. As you may know, I became a social studies teacher over 25 years ago because I know that our youth is our future AND that we all need to learn, in school and at home, that our “more perfect union” functions only in as much as we are engaged citizens. Every voice matters and your vote is your voice.
When we all become active, as you have done by your involvement in this and other campaigns, we help create a better place to call home, a more just and safe environment. Let’s face it, the goal is prosperity for all.
Congratulations for being a part of something big. I’m excited to move on to the General Election in November and be a part of this tide of change that is much bigger than just you and me. People are speaking loudly and clearly now. It’s time for some significant changes in the right (or left) direction.
I’ll be getting back to you, but in the mean time, please don’t hesitate to call me if you have ideas or thoughts on how to engage more voters. And again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for your contribution to the campaign and stay safe.
Best,
Shannon O’Brien
Candidate Montana Senate District 46
