May is Wildfire Awareness Month

May is National Wildfire Awareness month, and the Blackfoot Clearwater community is prone to wildland fire. During your annual spring-cleaning efforts celebrate Wildfire Awareness Month by preparing your home and property for the upcoming fire season. Some suggestions include:

• Clean your roof and gutters by removing pine needles or other debris.

• Remove any flammable material within five feet of your home.

• Remove items stored under your decks and porches, especially the remnants of last winter’s firewood and other flammable materials.

On behalf of the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation we want to thank the residents of the Blackfoot Clearwater. This spring the property owners have been responsible in their debris burning, keeping their fires small and under control. Please keep up-to-date with all the debris burning information at https://app.mt.gov/burnpermit/ and remember to activate your permit each day you want to burn.

As we move into fire season, we ask that you continue to be diligent and careful with fire. Rest assured that the Montana DNRC is committed to aggressive initial attack to keep fires small, minimizing exposure to firefighters and the public.

For Wildfire Awareness Month this year, let’s all take some time to do your part to make our community more resilient to wildfire. For project ideas on how to make your home and property more defensible to wildfire please visit https://www.keepmontanagreen.com/wam.

If you have any questions, concerns or to be placed on a list for a free home assessment at a later date please email Joe Rediske at the Montana DNRC Clearwater Unit, joe.rediske@mt.gov
