Flathead National Forest suspends spring prescribed burning

Swan Valley – The Flathead National Forest has put an indefinite hold on spring prescribe burning operations due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Forest will continue to adapt as the situation evolves and work in coordination with local and state health organizations.

While the USDA Forest Service has not issued an agency-wide direction to pause all prescribed burning activity, the Northern Region conducted a risk assessment and paused prescribed fire for the following reasons:

1. The ability to maintain fire responder viability and sustainability;

2. Potential smoke impacts to communities from prescribed fire and how that interacts with COVID-19 effects;

3. The ability to use local resources so inter-state travel is not necessary.

For more information call your local ranger district.
