Swan Valley Community Library highlights
Swan Valley - The Swan Valley Library Book Chat group will be discussing “The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek” on Wednesday, March 11 at 1 p.m. It is written by Kim Michele Richardson of Kentucky where the story takes place. Richardson spent years visiting the state’s rural areas getting stories of the people and their traditions along with their hardships and social injustices they endured.
It is the story of Cussy Mary Carter. The book is based on the true story of the brave and dedicated packhorse librarians of the 1930s. The mobile librarians were funded by President Franklin Roosevelt’s Works Progress Administration which was created to lift Americans out of the Great Depression. Unemployment in Kentucky rose to 40 percent during the Depression.
Carter tells the story with a thick Kentucky accent laced with local expressions of that time. She is afflicted with a genetic condition which causes a blue tint to her skin. It causes her much grief and suspicion from locals resulting in prejudice against her kind for any sort of trouble or from participating in local events and ceremonies. Even the laws at the time forbade “blues” from marrying those with “white” skin.
Carter wove her way on treacherous ground from shack to shack on a loyal but cantankerous mule named Junia delivering reading material, “hope and just as importantly, a compassionate human connection.”
A reviewer said “this well-researched tale serves as a solid history lesson on 1930s Kentucky.”
To be added to the mailing list for book chat meetings call the library.
