SEELEY LAKE – Despite the feet of new snow, the organizers of the 10th annual Seeley Lake Pond Hockey Tournament (SLPH) will not be swayed. The Four rinks in the south bay of Seeley Lake will be ready to welcome 34 teams Jan. 10-12. The community is invited down to the lake to enjoy the tournament.
SLPH is a USA Hockey sanctioned tournament that is designed as a fund raiser for local charities as well as a weekend to bolster local commerce in Seeley Lake. Since its inception in 2010, the SLPH tournament has donated close to $7,500 to help bring both young aspiring hockey players into the sport, as well as increase resources to allow our local grade school to have better access kinetic sports.
The website states, “We strive to raise money for local organizations and provide an opportunity for kids to be exposed to, as well as learn to love, the great sport of ice hockey.”
The tournament attracted teams from Montana, Oregon, Idaho and Washington this year with some players traveling from Minnesota. The tournament will be run the same as last year. Teams are split into five divisions: Cup, Competitive, Intermediate, Co-Rec and Womens. Games will be played on four rinks during the day. Once it gets dark, three rinks will be lit for the evening games.
Each team plays one game Friday, two games on Saturday and at least one game Sunday, depending on if they make it into the championship round. Games start between 4-5 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday mornings. Championship games will be Sunday afternoon.
Spectators are invited down to watch the games for no charge and warming fires will be going. This year Willie’s Distillery from Ennis, Mont. will be providing the brews.
The up-to-date schedule will be available on the website seeleylakepondhockey.com. Also, follow Seeley Lake Pond Hockey Facebook page for announcements and updates.
