SEELEY LAKE - Phase II of the Double Arrow Ranch Subdivision added a little competitive spirit to the holidays with a decorative lighting contest. The contest was a way to show appreciation to those who provided a bright spot in the neighborhood and perhaps to encourage others to show their Christmas spirit.
Twenty-one residents participated this year in the second annual competition. Three volunteers judged the light displays. Judges considered originality/creativity, magnitude, attractiveness and design/theme to rank the displays.
The judges awarded three grand prizes with a nominal monetary award. William Bartolet in Lot 89 on the corner of Morrell Creek Drive and Laurel Lane received the Grand Prize. Second place was awarded to Terry Smith in Lot 62 on the corner of Morrell Creek Drive and Tamarack Drive. Jeffrey Ebert in Lot 31 received third place with his lighted display.
One of the judges said Spirit Awards were given to three serious contenders for third place and four others that could be in serious contention and in the running with some upgrades next year. Lots 68, 47, 66, 79, 26, 84 and 85 received Spirit Awards.
Among the Spirit Award winners were Craig Wilson, his wife Erika and daughter Grace who live at Lot 68. They were all decked out in lights and sang "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" and offered cookies in what was called "an attempt to bribe the Christmas Light judges."
The remaining 12 entries, Lots 21, 17, 23, 83, 103, 69, 13, 33, 32, 74 and 75, received an honorable mention for showing some light.
