Eagles fall to Blackhawks on home court

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks and Lady Blackhawks' first home game of the season was against Valley Christian Eagles Dec. 19. Friday they headed to Hot Springs to face the Savage Heat.

The Boys came out strong against the Eagles but couldn't get much more than a couple basket lead until the third quarter. They outscored the Eagles 14-4 in the third and were able to hold on for a 62-49 victory.

Owen Mercado pounded in a dozen baskets and a pair of free throws to lead the Blackhawks with 28 points. Sawyer Shelmerdine stuck in a half dozen baskets for 12 points. Quinlan Ream hit a pair of three pointers on his way to 8 points while Dakota Wood and Chase Haines scored 5 each followed by Walker McDonald with 4.

The Blackhawks handled the Savage Heat with ease racking up 30 points in the first quarter and added another 20 by the half while holding the Heat to just 16. The Boys rode their lead through the second half to a final score of 65-36.

Three Blackhawks scored into the double digits including Mercado with 24, Shelmerdine with 15 and Ream with 12. Wood had a pair of three pointers for his 6 points while McDonald had 4 followed by Haines and Brayden Rodriquez with 2 each.

The Lady Blackhawks flew past the Valley Christian Eagles to a blowout victory with a final score of 58-12.

Bethany Hoag led the Lady Blackhawks with 12 points including the teams only two three pointers. Terra Bertsch and Klaire Kovatch added 10 points each followed by Emily Maughan and Sariah Maughan with 8 each, Dani Sexton with 4, Rose Mercer and Aspen Conley with 2 each and 1 each from Kara Good and Hannah Ayers.

The Lady Blackhawks found a lot stiffer competition at Hot Springs. The teams battled in the first quarter with both teams sinking multiple three pointers. The Lady Blackhawks trailed 17-19 heading into the second quarter but managed to shut down Hot Springs shooting. They held them to just a single three pointer and a free throw while racking up 20 points to take a 14-point advantage into the second half.

In the second half Hot Springs chipped away at the Lady Blackhawks' lead cutting it to 11 by the third quarter. The Lady Blackhawks struggled in the final frame hitting just one basket and only 2 of 6 free throws while Hot Springs closed the gap hitting a pair of three pointers, a pair of twos and nailing 6 of 6 free throws. The Lady Blackhawks fell 47-48.

Bertsch led the Lady Blackhawks' valiant effort with 14 points. She hit 3, three pointers and was 3 of 4 from the free throw line. Conley sunk 3 three pointers as well for 9 points. Also scoring: Sariah 7, Kovatch 6, Hoag 4, Good 3, Emily 2 and Kyla Conley 2.
