POTOMAC – With 16 Pioneers on the team this year, Potomac School's Flag Football team came away with nine wins and two losses. "This was a great year for Potomac flag football," said head coach Marty Preston.
Preston is a Potomac resident and father and has been the coach for the last two and a half years with his first year beginning after the season started.
Preston's son Martin was the assistant coach this year. For the Prestons, flag football is a family affair.
Marty's son Hunter played last year and this year son Ethan is playing while coached by his dad and brother.
"Martin was a major asset by offering perspective and helping boost my own confidence while helping kids one on one," said Marty.
Preston believes having Martin help coach and helping players individually was a huge part in the success of the team. "I cannot explain how proud I am of this team's accomplishments."
This year's coaching strategy focused on conservative plays and blocking. Preston attributes the two losses to not having all their players for those games.
"We gave every player a starting position and let them pick their own plays," Preston said. "The players enjoyed that responsibility and put more effort into the game because of it."
Preston added, "Everyone put in their best effort and they should all be as proud of themselves as I am of them all. After this season... I can't wait for next year."
