SEELEY LAKE - Many of us have been introduced to author Pete Fromm by reading his humorous books about life in the wilderness, such as "Indian Creek Chronicles or The Names of the Stars: A Life in the Wilds." Yet, many of Fromm's novels explore interior life as well. Novels like "If Not for This" might begin on the Snake River in Idaho, but rapidly evolve into the challenges of marriage, family and tragedy. This is vividly true of his newest novel, "A Job You Mostly Won't Know How to Do." Recently returned from a two-month book tour in France, Fromm will be reading and signing his novel at Alpine Artisans' Open Book Club this Saturday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Grizzly Claw Trading Company in Seeley Lake. The event is free, refreshments served and everyone is welcome.
"A Job You Mostly Won't Know How to Do" begins with a familiar story: Taz is a carpenter so busy putting together part-time construction jobs that he has no time to finish his own home. Set in Missoula and on the Blackfoot River, his priorities change when his wife becomes pregnant with their first child. Fromm intertwines his love of Western Montana and the Blackfoot Valley with Taz's deep love for his wife. Her death in childbirth changes all of that. Yet, Taz gradually manages to build a life with his daughter supported by a community that loves and supports him.
Fromm described his intentions with this novel in an interview with Montana Public Radio. He stated, "I've been so lucky in my whole life...I blundered into coming out to Montana. I blundered into William Kittredge's writing class and found out what I wanted to do. I always wonder "What if?" What if you had something going on and then some big roadblock came? You know, you're going to the hospital to have your baby and then you come home without your wife. Then what?"
Fromm is a five-time winner of the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association Book Award. Join us at the Open Book Club to hear and talk with Pete Fromm about his newest work.
