PHC Cares Food Drive through Oct. 30

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley-Swan Medical Center is running a PHC Cares Food Drive through Oct. 30. All the departments within Partnership Health Center including Missoula and Seeley Lake are competing for the most weight. The Medical Center is hoping the community will help them win. All donations will support the Seeley-Swan Community Food Bank in Seeley Lake.

The list of suggested items to donate include: canned tuna, meat, beans or chili; peanut butter; canned fruit or vegetables; salad dressing; cooking oil; Hunts tomato sauce; shelf-stable milk; brown rice; oatmeal; canned soup; pasta and whole-grain cereal.

The Medical Center will be closed for half of the day on Oct. 30 for their staff appreciation day. All of the donations will be weighed and the department or clinic with the most weight will receive a prize.

October push for donations at Paws Up

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley Lake Volunteer Fire Department is joining with Paws Up Animal Shelter in Potomac for their annual fall push to collect donations before winter. People may drop off unopened bags or cans of dog and cat food at the Fire Station, 200 Firehouse Lane. The Department will ensure all donations are forwarded to operators Owen and Hazel Tyler at the shelter.

“We have been a collection point for some time now and this will continue,” wrote Seeley Lake Fire Chief Dave Lane in an email. “October seems to be their push for donations so I thought a little more publicity and support from the department would be beneficial to their cause.”

Swan Valley Community Library Highlights

Swan Valley - The Swan Library was given a new community book exchange box which is attached to the front of the library. It is available at any time. Anyone can take a book from the box which is complete with a shingled roof and a door. If possible, the chosen book can be replaced with another book for the next person to read.

The October book chat book is “The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane.”

The New York Times best-selling author Lisa See of “The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane” was touted as “one of those special writers capable of delivering both poetry and plot” in a review.

The story is a picture of a little-known region of China and the people. It honors family ties. Li-yan is one of the few educated girls in her village which has farmed tea for generations and depends on ritual and routine. A stranger arrives in the village with the first automobile anyone in the village had ever seen. This event and others trigger Li-yan to reject the old customs. She leaves her out of wedlock baby at the orphanage in another town when the tradition was to give the child over to be killed. Li-yan leaves the village for a city to fulfill her life. Her child Hayley is raised in California. Mother and daughter are each seeking the other and both are searching for meaning in the study of Pu’er, the tea that was in her family for generations.

The book chat will be held at the Swan Valley Library Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.

The Swan Valley Library is located on Highway 83 in Condon and is just north and adjacent to the Swan Valley Community Hall. The library is open Mondays and Fridays from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. For more information call 754-2521.
