We are all different but we are still God's children

We are children of God. We are all different. We look different. We sound different. We act different. No two fingerprints are the same. We were created in the image of God, our Heavenly Father, and His Son, Jesus the Christ. “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness:” (Genesis 1:26). We are of the family of God.

We were not all alike in heaven. We know we were sons and daughters of Heavenly Parents. We possessed different talents and abilities, and we were called to do different things on earth. We all have different challenges. He knows what they are and will guide us through whatever sorrows may come.

The simple word “and” brings our world and our differences together. He created heaven AND earth, light AND dark, dry land AND the seas. Living amid AND with differences is what makes our world so beautiful and special. It is how Heavenly Father intended it to be. Living with differences is how we become more like He wants us to be. We experience joy AND sadness. We know life AND mortal death.

We believe different. We choose to commit to follow Him and Christ’s example. The natural man in us will usually judge, condemn and be contentious. The divine spirit in each of us can help us choose to love, forgive, be patient, and give people a chance. There will be those who oppose us and they aren’t easy to love. We won’t always agree with what they believe and we don’t have to because we have free will. Both sides do. The consequences of our choices will follow. Again, it is important to remember we are all still God’s children. We can try to see them as He sees and loves them.

We make mistakes. We always will. Through Christ’s Atonement we can repent, be forgiven and try again. Our mistakes will not change our identity as a child of God and our part of the family of God.

We can be different because we don’t have to be the same to be one. We are all God’s children.
