Lady Blackhawks soar over Scarlets

SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley-Swan Lady Blackhawks' volleyball season got underway with a win over Arlee Aug. 29 before the team headed to a tournament in Philipsburg Sept. 1.

The first three sets of the match with the Arlee Scarlets were really hard fought with the Lady Blackhawks dropping the first set, 24-26 and then winning the next two sets 28-26 and 27-25. The Ladies won the fourth set and with it took the match, 25-12.

Bethany Hoag and Trista Wendel led the Lady Blackhawks in kills with 6 and 4 respectively. Jordan Johnson and Aspen Conley had 4 assists each while Sariah Maughan led with 5 aces.

On the defensive side, Maughan had 3 solo blocks and 4 assisted blocks. Hoag had 9 digs and Wendel and Taylor Dillree each had 7 successful serve receptions.

At the tournament in Philipsburg the Lady Blackhawks took on four teams playing two sets to 15 points with each team. Competition was steep in their pool with four of five teams being divisional contenders last year.

The Lady Blackhawks fell to Gardiner in both sets, 13-15 and 12-15 and fell to Charlo based on points after splitting the sets 11-15 and 15-12.

The Lady Blackhawks split sets but won on points against Twin Bridges, 15-5 and 13-15, and Darby 14-15 and 15-12.

Klaire Kovatch and Hoag led the assault with 8 kills each while Conley had 9 assists and Dillree scored 5 aces.

Maughan had a pair of solo blocks and a pair of assisted blocks.

Five Ladies were in the double digits for digs including 15 digs from Dillree and Maughan, 13 digs from Conley and 12 from both Hoag and Wendel.

This week the Lady Blackhawks face their first conference opponents. They head to Valley Christian Sept. 5 with sets starting at 5:30 p.m. and then host Lincoln Sept. 7 with a start time of 4:30 p.m.
