Join in the fun at the Huckleberry Festival in Seeley Lake

SEELEY LAKE – Michelle Brumfield and Dawn Butler are looking forward to hosting the first Huckleberry Festival in Seeley Lake Sept. 21 starting at 10:30 a.m. in The BBQ Pit and Fat Hippie parking lot on Highway 83. The event will include contests, games and music as an end of the summer celebration with the community. Everyone is invited to get involved with the free event.

There will be a cooking contest for both men and women. Chefs are encouraged to make up their best recipe to enter for a chance to be crowned King Huckleberry or Queen Huckleberry for the year. The only requirement is the recipe must contain huckleberries. The deadline to register for the cooking contest is Sept. 18. Forms are available at The BBQ Pit, Fat Hippie, It’s A Wrap and Heritage Office Stop.

There will also be a contest for businesses to enter their best huckleberry products for a chance to win a traveling trophy; cake walk; face painting and other games for children.

Swan Valley AARP meeting, Sept. 3

Swan Valley - The Swan Valley AARP will meet Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 12 p.m. at the Swan Valley Community Hall.  A potluck lunch hosted by George and Emily Beck will begin at 12:30 p.m.  There will be a short business meeting starting at 1:30 p.m. after which we will share stories about our summer experiences.

SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley Lake Library’s Summer Reading Program concluded Thursday, Aug. 15. Several participants completed an entire reading sheet to have their names entered into the drawing for grand prizes. Sera Benton won the blanket, Jeremiah Garland won the fishing pole, Audrey Stevenson won the backpack and Conner Boltz won the tent.

The Seeley Lake Library Book Club resumes meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 11 a.m. to discuss Toni Morrison’s “The Bluest Eye.” This novel focuses on 11-year-old Pecola Breedlove, an African-American girl who prays for the blue eyes and blond hair that she believes will allow her to finally fit in. This novel examines our obsession with beauty and conformity and raises powerful questions about race, class and gender.

All are invited to join in the discussion. Books are available at the checkout desk. For more information call 677-8995.

The Seeley Lake Library is a branch of Missoula Public Library located at Seeley-Swan High School. The library is open to the public Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. – 6 p.m.
