Swan Valley School Board prepares for upcoming school year

SWAN VALLEY – The Swan Valley School Board approved budgets for the upcoming year, as well as contracts for educators and facility maintenance projects at their meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 6.

The board approved the school’s adopted General Fund budget for the 2020 fiscal year at nearly $375,000. According to District Clerk Heather Mincey the budget last year was approximately $388,000. The budget reserves are currently at $35,000, however this is lower than it should be.

“We have quite a bit of taxes that haven’t been paid yet,” said Mincey. “It’s a matter of waiting. ”

The Swan Valley building reserve fund will have nearly $51,000 for the upcoming fiscal year. Money in the building reserve fund can be used for general building maintenance.

In addition to approving the budget for the 2020 fiscal year, the board also approved a contract with Matthew Brothers Construction in Condon to remodel the school. The remodel is aimed to increase school security through a single portal entrance to the building and totals nearly $35,000 which will be allocated from the building reserve fund.

In terms of school safety, staff at Swan Valley Elementary have been invited to attend an active shooter training at Seeley Lake Elementary on Aug. 26. This training will be at no cost to the Swan Valley Elementary.

The board approved staff contracts for a variety of staff members including: Chris Mauldin, Jamie Matthew, Colleen Harrington, Katie Gleason, Danni Parcell and Dar Kearney. The board will consider the contract with Ralph King, the recently approved principal, after his background check is completed.

The next board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. at Swan Valley Elementary.
