Part 1
MISSOULA – Potomac Valley 4-H Club and the Seeley Lake Trailblazers stood out at this year's Western Montana Country Fair Aug. 7-11. Despite the 90 plus degree days at the start of the fair, many project were chosen at the top of their class while a few placed in the top overall.
Again this year the sheep were a stand-out. Four of the top 10 market lambs were from the local clubs: Trailblazers Laciey Auchenbach, Chris Auchenbach and Amanda Thomas and Kyla Nelson with Potomac Valley.
This was Laciey's second year showing sheep and she was really happy with how well she did. She felt things went so well because she practiced with her sheep almost every day leading up to the fair.
Trailblazer Dani Sexton also placed in the top with her market beef finishing sixth place over all with her project and taking a purple ribbon in showmanship.
"These kids work for everything they earn," said Dylan Enyart, this year's 4-H and FFA market and breeding animals judge. "I think one of the worst problems in today's youth is entitlement. That is the reason that I love this business, it is the reason why I love these kids, and why I love working with these kids is because you can see the disappointment in their eyes, in their face and in their posture when things don't go their way. But you can also see the breath of fresh air that they take when they are rewarded for their hard work. [Hard work and dedication] is not to win a show, it is to be successful human beings in your adult life. Being mature, productive citizens of the United States of America, I think that is what it is about. I'm proud to consider these kids my fellow future of America. Always remember a sore loser does not make a great leader. Be a leader, impact someone's life every day, strive to be better than you were the day before."
This was the first year in generations that there wasn't some form of 4-H Café at the Fair. 4H members are selling 4-H Hog Raffle tickets through Sept. 10th, to help make up the income the 4-H Café generated. Contact a local 4-Her to purchase tickets.
4-H Club Results
4-H uses the Danish system in the judging process. Top ribbons include grand and reserve champion, followed by a purple group (P – top in their class), blue group (B), red group (R) and white group (W – participation ribbon) according to the placing received.
