“The Help” is a story of two maids in 1962 Jackson, Missippi, Aibileen and Minny who join with Skeeter a white socialite who just graduated from college with a degree in journalism to write a tell-all book about being a African American maid in the south. Skeeter is filled with ideas but is considered a failure without a husband. Their project could forever change all their lives and destinies and the town in which they live.

A reader said , “The Help” is an emotional rollercoaster with a touching message and a strong undercurrent of hope.....I can’t recommend it strongly enough.”

A review said “ In a page-turner that brings new resonance to the moral issues involved, Stockett spins a story of a social awakening as seen from both sides of the American racial divide.”

The #1 New York Times bestselling novel on which the Academy Award-winning film is based was also nominated by PBS’s The Great American Read as one of American’s best-loved novels.

Stockett was born and raised in Jackson, Miss. where the novel takes place. “The Help” is her debut novel.
