Records fall as Girls take first, Boys second at Western C

MISSOULA - The Seeley-Swan Girls won the Western C Divisional track meet May 16-17 outscoring second place Charlo 123 to 91.5 while the Boys came in second with 98.5 points behind Manhattan Christian with 103.

The Girls wasted no time making their mark in the record book. In the first event on the track, the 4x100 relay team consisting of Terra Bertsch, Lily Mercer, Sariah Maughan and Klaire Kovatch broke the school record with a time of 50.89 seconds. Mercer, Andi Bohlman, Alex Bohlman and Paige Holmes set the previous record of 50.95 seconds in 2016.

The relay team had been closing in on the record all season but it surprised all of them to break it, especially Sariah who didn't realize the team was that close to the record until after the race.

Kovatch knew they were really close and if they nailed their handoffs they could get it. Competition from the Charlo team pushed Kovatch and helped her overcome a headwind on the final leg.

Currently Seeley-Swan and Charlo have the two fastest times in the State Class C this year.

None of the Girls on the relay team are strangers to school records. Mercer was on both the long and short relay teams that set school records in 2016. Maughan, a freshman, holds a couple of records at the grade school and is closing in on the high school's 800-meter record.

Bertsch and Kovatch were just getting started at the Divisional with the record in the relay as both furthered their own individual school records too. Bertsch added six inches to her pole vault record clearing 10 foot 6 inches and Kovatch threw 150 feet 2 inches in the discus extending her record more than 6 feet. Kovatch's throw was also a Western C Divisional Meet record.

Other top finishes for the Girls include Sariah's first place in the 800 and 1600, Mercer's first place in the 400, first place in the 4x400 relay and Autumn Morse's first place in the javelin.

On the Boys side Hunter Shelmerdine took first in the 100, 200 and 400. Dakota Wood was right behind Shelmerdine in the 200 and took third in the 100 while Caleb Maughan took second in the 800.

Both the Boys 4x100 and 4x400 took first place with Shelmerdine, Wood, Caleb and Lane Mackie-Wendel on the short relay and Shelmerdine, Wood, Caleb and Cordell Turner in the long relay.

Walker McDonald led the Boys on the field earning second in the discus and third in the shot put while Nate Samuli took second in the javelin.

The team heads to Laurel Mont. for the State Class C Meet this year May 23-25.
