If you can imagine it, we can build it

SEELEY LAKE – For Steven Wilson, it all started with Tog'l blocks and an erector set. Now after more than 30 years building from the ground up, Wilson and his wife Juli opened Steve Wilson Construction in Seeley Lake. Their goal is to establish lasting relationships with their customers by exceeding expectations and gaining trust through exceptional performance by every member of their construction team.

"I didn't know what I wanted to do in life. I just started building stuff as a kid – models, tree forts and worked my way up to go carts and a hang glider," said Wilson. "The reason I got into construction was because it was the best paying job I could get coming out of high school without going to college."

Wilson moved to Montana in 1967 at the age of three. He moved to California and worked as a journeyman carpenter for five years. He attended school for 11 months learning everything about building a house from start to finish including all the laws a general contractor must follow. After five general contractors signed off that he was competent as a general contractor, he took and passed the eight-hour general contractor test. He was licensed as a general contractor in 1988.

In California, one of his largest projects was a five-story, 98,000 square foot apartment complex that covered a city block. At the time he had a crew of 50 guys working for him.

Wilson returned to Montana and lived in Hamilton. He got his Montana general contractor license in 1998. Some of his notable projects in Montana include building the bank in Corvallis; the church on the highway outside of Clinton; various projects for the State including fish ladders, the concrete diversion at Blanchard Creek and the superfund site in Lincoln.

After meeting his wife, Wilson moved to Seeley Lake.

"I am an avid fisherman and hunter so what better community than Seeley Lake," said Wilson who also enjoys riding his four-wheeler and Harley.

Wilson co-owns Steve Wilson Construction with Juli. Their business motto is "If you can imagine it, we can build it."

"We pride ourselves in custom work, not cookie cutter buildings," said Wilson. "We like to allow the customer to participate in the dream instead of choosing out of a catalogue. We are helping people build their dreams, not ours."

Steve Wilson Construction offers all phases of construction for commercial and residential. They can do everything from the ground up including excavating and concrete up to custom decks, gazebos and landscaping as well as kitchen and bathroom remodels. They also utilize a few subcontractors that are master craftsman in their trade depending on the project.

"We try to get to know our customers as every project is only limited to their imagination. Our customers are not just clients, they are our neighbors," said Wilson. "We wave as we pass each other on the road, this is why we chose Seeley to start our business."

Steve Wilson Construction currently employs three crew members. Everyone is local and was hired this spring. They are now in the middle of their first project.

"Being a small town, most locals don't have much of an opportunity to learn a trade without going to trade school," said Wilson. "We are trying to give back to the community by employing local people that are interested in learning a trade enabling them to support themselves and or family. Sometimes people just need to be given a chance."

Currently his crew has experience in many different trades. Wilson sees that as an opportunity to create a cohesive crew and learn from each other.

"It is all interactive working – it's not just my way," said Wilson. "The most important thing about doing construction is to have fun. If you have fun doing what you are doing the days go by [so fast]. It is a lot of camaraderie."

Steve Wilson Construction is licensed, bonded and insured. They are based out of Seeley Lake but are always willing to travel for projects that require special attention.

"Every day is something different. I love getting to work outside, being in the sun and having a crew where everyone works together," said Wilson. "In the end you can look at what you build and say, 'Wow, I built that.' It is the gratification of seeing what you can put together. If you can imagine it, we can built it. Throw something at me that you think I can't do and I'll show you."
