OVANDO – A single-vehicle roll over on Highway 200 May 7 claimed the life of 19-year-old man from Browning. Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Brian Inman said alcohol, speed and not wearing seatbelts were the major factors in the crash. No citations were issued.
According to Inman, early Tuesday morning a 2000 Pontiac Sunfire was westbound on Highway 200. It came to the curve in the road just west of Ovando at mile marker 41.9. The driver Uriel Tatsey, 19 from Browning, overcorrected and went off the right side of the road. He overcorrected back onto the road and then overcorrected again to try and stay on the road sliding sideways. The vehicle slid off the right side of the road and rolled two times before coming to a rest on its wheels facing east. Both the driver and 23-year-old passenger of Cascade, Mont. were ejected.
Inman estimated the crash happened around 4 a.m. but the passenger was unsure of the timing since he was asleep when the crash happened. A passing motorist called 9-1-1 just after 5 a.m. Emergency crews were dispatched at 5:15 a.m. Ovando Volunteer Fire Department and Seeley Lake Volunteer firefighters responded.
Tatsey was found just north of the vehicle. He was dead at the scene.
The passenger regained consciousness and was transported to St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula. Inman said he sustained non-life threatening injuries to his pelvis and back.
