"I could tell when she first started that she would be good," said Seeley-Swan Head Golf Coach Wayne Cahoon with a smile.
Cahoon was talking about one of the four rookies that made up this year's high school golf team. Freshman golfer Tegan Mauldin started the season shooting a 142 at Hamilton. She needed to work that down to 120 to qualify for state.
Golf wasn't Mauldin's first choice but a basketball injury kept her from going out for track. So, for the first time in her life, she picked up a golf club. Maudlin laughed that her lack of experience helped her out in the long run. Cahoon agreed that she had no bad habits to correct.
As usual to Seeley-Swan's spring sports the first couple weeks of practice had to be done indoors until the snow had left. Normally this is seen as a negative but Cahoon said in this case it actually worked in Mauldin's favor. Being a brand new golfer it gave them a chance to work on technique without the distractions of being on a course.
Through Mauldin's willingness to learn and natural talent she improved, shooting a 129 and a 124 before finally shooting a 117 at St. Regis.
By shooting less than 120, Mauldin became the only one on Seeley-Swan's team to earn a spot at next week's Class C State Golf Tournament to be held at Double Arrow Golf Course. Nearly 60 girls and 80 boys from all across the state will join Mauldin on her home course May 14 and 15.
Cahoon is really proud of Mauldin and said she was a pleasure to coach. Regardless of how Mauldin does at State she says she had a lot of fun and she plans to go out for golf next year.
