Students participate in AARP's biennial speech contest

SWAN VALLEY - The Swan Valley chapter of AARP sponsored its biennial speech contest for fifth through eighth grade students at Swan Valley Elementary on May 2. Participants presented speeches in one of three categories: a demonstration, an original speech or a memorized work of someone else.

In the seventh and eighth grade demonstrations category, Trista Alexander placed first with the speech How to Make a Fighter Jet; Nakira Morgan placed second with Animal Care and Christopher Auchenbach placed third with How to Build a Stool.

In the fifth and sixth grade demonstrations category, Rilyn Richardson placed first with Ways to Curl Hair. Tate McNutt placed second with Chess and Olivia Mitchell also placed second for her demonstration Sound Box Circuit. Sam Hughes placed third with Snakes!

In the seventh and eighth grade memorized speech category, Jalen Kauffman placed first with Why I Should Get a Dog written by Kyla Conley. Connor Matthew placed second with Mountain Man written by C.B. Rich.

In the fifth and sixth grade memorized speech category, Aubrey Matthew placed first with Every Child Needs a Champion written by R. Pierson. Darby Gleason placed second with The Farmer and the Queen and The Dirtiest Man in the World written by Shel Silverstein.

In the seventh and eighth grade original speech category, Kyla Conley placed first with Life as a Rubik's Cube.

In the fifth and sixth grade original speech category, Lillian Boyd placed first with My Poetry Experience. Angela Ream placed second with My Best Friend.

Judges for the event included Barb and Joe Raible, Emily and George Beck and Sharon Lamar.

The judges agreed the presentations were impressive for the range of subject matter and the creativity of the participants. Judge Barb Raible commented, "What fun! The students did an amazing job."
