The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks participated in the Top 10 meet in Missoula April 23 before heading to Great Falls April 27.
Ten Blackhawks earned invites to the prestigious Russ Pilcher Top 10 meet and they represented Seeley-Swan well, placing in six individual events and sweeping both the Boys and Girls 4x400 relays.
For the Boys, Hunter Shelmerdine took the top spot in the 400-meter with a time of 50.77 seconds while Logan Robinson earned third place in both the 100 and 200-meter races.
Caleb Maughan and Dakota Wood joined Shelmerdine and Robinson for the 4x400. The Boys finished with a time of 3:28.46 minutes.
Klaire Kovatch was the top finisher for the girls taking first place in the discus with a throw of 129 feet 3 inches, nearly 15 feet farther than second place. Autumn Morse earned second in the javelin with a throw of 120 feet 5 inches and Lily Mercer took second in the 400-meter crossing the line at 59.40 seconds, a new personal record.
Hannah Ayers and Sariah Maughan joined Kovatch and Mercer for their 4x400 victory, finishing in 4:09.04 minutes. This win was no small feat, of the nine other relay teams, five were from Class AA schools and the remaining four were Class A schools. The spread between the Blackhawks and tenth place was less than 9 seconds.
In Great Falls Seeley-Swan took on athletes from 30 teams, mostly from the eastern half the state, at the Fairview Belt #2. The Girls took first place with 79 points over second place Fort Benton with 68 points while the Boys tied with Fort Benton for first place at 75 points each.
On the track for the Girls, Sariah earned first place with a time of 2:32.39 minutes in the 800-meter and first place in the 1600-meter with a time of 5:34.64. Both Sariah's times were personal records. Ayers was 7 seconds behind Sariah in the 1600 setting a personal record for herself and earning third place with a time of 5:41.88.
Sariah also earned fourth in the 400 while Mercer took fourth in the 200 and fifth in the 100. Terra Bertsch took third in the 100-meter hurdles. The Girls 4x400 relay team took first and the 4x100 took third.
In the field events Kara Good blew away the competition and her personal record by nearly 14 feet with a throw of 111 feet 7 inches in the discus. Morse won the javelin by more than 15 feet with a throw of 124 feet 3 inches, a new personal record.
On the Boys' side, Robinson continued to dominate the 100 and 200-meter events earning first in both races while Shelmerdine took the top spot in the 400-meter. Caleb Maughan took second behind Robinson in the 100 while Shelmerdine took fifth in the 200.
The Boys' relay teams were unstoppable, as they took first in the 4x100 and 4x400 with times of 45.37 and 3:34.32 respectively.
Nate Samuli threw 151 feet 3 inches for third place in the javelin while Walker McDonald set a new personal record in the shot put of 43 feet 10 inches earning sixth place. Shelmerdine triple jumped into a tie for third place while Caleb Maughan took fifth in the high jump.
This week Seeley-Swan will be back in Missoula May 4 for the Kim Haines Memorial track meet.
