Students perform at Celebration of the Arts

SEELEY LAKE - On April 24, the students of Seeley-Swan High School presented their pieces of art and performed for community members at the annual Celebration of the Arts. The drama class, school band, creative writing class, choir and juniors who wrote persuasive speeches entertained parents and community members. The students from the art class displayed their artwork across tables, allowing viewers to examine their hard work with decorations. The audience enjoyed a variety of treats throughout the evening,

SSHS has held the Celebration of the Arts for the past three years. Teachers wanted to give the students an opportunity to express themselves artistically, so they created the event. Each year they offer new entertainment for the community of Seeley Lake.

The event was a group effort between three main teachers and the students participating. Crissina Quinn, the Drama teacher, Creative Writing teacher Lori Messenger and Art teacher Cathy Novak helped with the event. Stereotypically, writing isn't seen as an art. However, Quinn and Messenger wanted to bring forth a new type of art with writing.

"It really challenges the definition of art," says Quinn. "Being in high school, there's a bit of a disconnect between students and their parents and the community, more so when they were in elementary school. It just allows for a night and a celebration for everybody to be invited to and for students to showcase the hard work they've done throughout the year and we get to celebrate their successes."

"I feel like we're educating younger people about presenting artwork to the community," says Messenger. "But we're also educating the audience, our public, and our community about how to respond to this kind of art."

Before the event, participating students felt shared emotions of nervousness and excitement. Afterward, both teachers and students alike felt accomplished and prideful in their hard work.

Students and teachers thanked music teacher Sandra Abbott for her help and in teaching the musicians of the school. Gratitude was also sent out to the community members for attending the event and to the students for participating.
