Grizzly bear euthanized after cattle depredations in Helmville Valley

HELMVILLE - Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks euthanized a sub-adult male grizzly bear on Tuesday, April 23 in the Helmville Valley in response to its involvement with livestock depredations.

USDA Wildlife Services captured the grizzly after it killed a calf on April 20. The bear killed two calves prior to its capture on April 23 and was suspected to be involved in three depredations last year near that same site.

Due to the bear’s history of livestock depredations, FWP made the decision to euthanize it in consultation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and in accordance with Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee guidelines.

The Swan Valley Library’s monthly book chat group will be discussing Alexis Smith’s first novel “Glaciers” Wednesday, May 8 at 1 p.m. at the library.

“Glaciers” is a very short read of 174 pages, set in Portland, Ore. The novel, which is more like a novella according to one reviewer, follows 20-something Isabel who is a thrift store shopper and remnant collector and works with damaged books. It is an internal story that takes place in a single day. It moves between the imagined future, the present and past which reminds one of the writing of Virginia Woolf who showed how one day can reflect a whole life. Isabel contrasts deteriorating city structures with the loss of glaciers in her childhood home in Alaska.

A reviewer said, “While she contemplates loss and the intricate fissures it creates in our lives, she accumulates the stories - the remnants - of those around her and she begins to tell her own story.”

Author Alexis Smith was raised in Soldotna, Alaska and Seattle, Wash and now lives in Portland, Ore.

Story time for youngsters is held every Friday at 11 a.m. along with an arts and crafts project.
