Blackhawks off and running

MISSOULA - After two weeks of canceled meets due to the unusually snowy winter in Missoula and the Bitterroot, the track season finally got under way April 6.

The meet featured approximately 1,000 athletes from 28 teams across A, B and C class schools.

Despite the sea of athletes to wade though, the Seeley-Swan Blackhawks Boys placed fourth with 53 points while the Ladies took sixth with 40 points.

Both the Boys' relay teams took first place. The 4x100 relay team consisting of Logan Robinson, Hunter Shelmerdine, Dakota Wood and Soren Moon finished in 45.49 seconds Caleb Maughan joined Robertson, Shelmerdine and Wood in the 4x400 relay that finished in 3:27.59.

Robinson took the top spot in the 100-meter with a time of 11.43 seconds and second in the 200-meter with a time of 22.73 seconds.

Shelmerdine took second in the 400-meter finishing in 52.92 seconds followed by Maughan in fourth with a time of 53.54 seconds. Maughan also took sixth place in the high jump clearing 5 foot 6 inches.

Nate Samuli was the only boy to place in the throwing events earning fifth place in the javelin with a throw of 155 feet 2 inches.

For the Ladies, Terra Bertsch was the points leader. She finished first in the pole vault clearing 10 feet, third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.25 seconds and fourth in the high jump going over the bar at 4 foot 8 inches.

Sariah Maughan took third in 400-meter with a time of 1:01.84 minutes.

In the field events Klaire Kovatch took second place in the discus with a throw of 124 feet 11.5 inches while Autumn Morse finished third in the javelin, throwing 114 feet 6 inches.

This week the team headed to Corvallis April 9 and then heads to Polson April 12.
