Burn permits Potomac style

POTOMAC - The partnership between the Greenough/Potomac Volunteer Fire Department (GPVFD) and the Potomac Valley 4-H Club was a continued success Feb. 23 at the annual Pancakes and Permits event in Potomac at the Potomac Greenough Community Center.

The focus of the community event was for residents to prepare for burning season by obtaining their burn permits and maintaining their fire extinguishers while enjoying a hot breakfast and fellowship with neighbors. The GPVFD and the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation issued 74 burn permits.

DNRC as well as the GPVFD had booths and information set up for wildland fire safety and prevention that included information for adults as well as children.

The Potomac Valley 4-H Club members worked alongside the GPVFD volunteers and their families to present pancakes, eggs, sausages and hot drinks to the Potomac Community.

Longtime Potomac resident Moe Christensen was the first arrival. She came in smiling and visiting and ready to get her burn permit before eating. She was among people from Greenough to Rainbow Bend that trickled into the event that drew 140 attendees in the first hour.

Jerry Larango with Missoula Fire Equipment provided filling, testing and inspections of fire extinguishers. Fire extinguishers should be inspected and tested regularly.

According to GPVFD Chief Ryan Hall, the event drew a record crowd. While he added the event brought in good donations, he said that was not the emphasis of the event.

Hall said, "It was a good crowd, good food and good people."
