Public invited to meet SSHS Principal candidates, join MCPS superintendent search

SEELEY LAKE – The community is invited to meet the three Seeley-Swan High School principal candidates and offer their feedback Thursday, Feb. 21 from 8:15 – 9 a.m. at SSHS. Dr. Kathleen Pecora, SSHS principal, will be retiring in June.

The three candidates include Wendy Hansmann from Missoula County Public Schools, Kellen Palmer from Douglas, Wyo. and current SSHS Science teacher Tonya Smith.

Missoula County Public Schools Superintendent Mark Thane is also retiring at the end of the school year. MCPS Board of Trustees with the support of Ray and Associates, Inc. is conducting a search for the new superintendent. The consultant group is gathering critical information for the selection of the new leader for MCPS.

The community is invited to share their thoughts, ideas and opinions about what they want in the next MCPS superintendent during a Parent and Community Focus group meeting Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m. at SSHS. Those that cannot attend the meeting are invited to complete a short online survey by March 12.

Applicants sought for Seeley Lake Community Council

SEELEY LAKE - Missoula County Commissioners are looking to fill one commissioner-appointed vacancy on the Seeley Lake Community Council. The term runs through May 31, 2019 and the selected member will be eligible for reappointment should they wish to continue serving beyond that date.

The council is comprised of seven members who are registered voters within the boundaries of the Seeley Lake School District. Members of the Seeley Lake Community Council are elected to advance and promote the interests and welfare of the citizens of the Seeley Lake community by providing useful, beneficial and helpful information for Missoula County Commissioners to consider in their decision-making process.

Applications are available  in the County Commissioners’ Office, located at 199 W. Pine St. or online at https://www.missoulacounty.us/community/volunteer. Submissions may be filed electronically or emailed to sbell@missoulacounty.us. The application deadline is 3 p.m. Wednesday, March 13.  

No special district elections for local boards

Following the Feb. 11 deadline to file for open board of trustee positions, the local boards either had the same number of applicants for positions up for reelection or seats went unfilled.

In Potomac, Jennifer Iverson was the only applicant for the open three-year term on the Greenough-Potomac Fire District

In Swan Valley, Lacey McNutt was the only applicant for a three-year term on the Swan Valley Community Council. John Mercer put in for a three-year term on the Swan Fire District. Two open seats for three-year terms remain, one on the Swan Valley Community Council and one on the Swan Fire District.

In Seeley Lake, Jack Greenwood and Doug Anderson applied for the two, three-year terms on the Seeley Lake Community Council.

On the Seeley Lake Rural Fire District, Doug Waldron put in for the only three-year term.

Finally, Seeley-Swan Hospital District board incumbents Walt Hill and Twyla Johnson applied unopposed for their current three-year and one-year terms.
