Seeley-Swan tames the Mountain Cats, falls to Plains

SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks and Lady Blackhawks took on the Clark Fork Coop Mountain Cats in Alberton Jan. 25 and then hosted the Horsemen and Trotters from Plains Jan. 26.

The Blackhawks took a sizable lead over the Mountain Cats in the first half but blew the game out in the third quarter, more than doubling their score. The Blackhawks finished the Cats off 55-27.

Cordell Turner led the Boys with 15 points with Chance Johnson just behind at 14. Johnson had 2 of the team's 5 three-pointers and the Blackhawks hit 12 of 19 from the free throw line.

Also scoring: Owen Mercado 11, Dakota Wood 6, Walker McDonald 5, Hunter Shelmerdine 3 and Seth Richardson 1.

The Lady Blackhawks also faired well against the Mountain Cats. They built a 10-point lead by the half and extended it to a 55-32 victory.

Ashley Miller led the Lady Blackhawks with 9 points while Taylor Dillree hit the Ladies' only three-pointer. The Ladies struggled from the free throw line hitting just 4 of 17.

Also scoring: Jory Towe 7, Kara Good 6, Bethany Hoag 6, Aspen Conley 6, Autumn Morse 5, Lily Mercer 5, Chloe Robbins 4, Sariah Maughan 2 and Lauryn Barnes 2.

Back on the home court, the Blackhawks found themselves trailing the Plains Horsemen through much of the game. Johnson sunk a three-pointer at the end of the third to put the Blackhawks ahead going into the final frame.

The fourth quarter turned into a three-point shooting match as Johnson nailed his second three-pointer and Turner drained 3 of them. The Horsemen answered back with 3 of their own. The Horsemen pulled just out of reach in part to hitting 9 of 13 free throws in the final frame. Blackhawks fell 44-49.

Turner had 18 points to lead the Blackhawks followed by Johnson with 17. The Blackhawks hit just 6 of 13 from the free throw line.

Also scoring: Mercado 6, Wood 2 and Shelmerdine 1.

The Lady Blackhawks stayed within a couple of baskets of Plains throughout most of the game. The Ladies couldn't make up any ground in the final quarter and slipped to a 41-54 loss.

Terra Bertsch scored 11 points to lead the Lady Blackhawks. The Ladies went 15 of 24 from the free throw line with Towe sinking 6 of 7 and Bertsch going 4 of 5. Bertsch and Hoag hit the Ladies' only three pointers.

Also scoring: Towe 8, Mercer 6, Barnes 6, Hoag 3, Morse 2, Conley 2, Robbins 2 and Maughan 1.

Next week

The Blackhawks and Lady Blackhawks head up the Blackfoot to Lincoln Feb. 1 with JV Boys taking the floor at 2 p.m. They then host Deer Lodge Feb. 2 with JV Boys starting at 1:30 p.m.
