Potomac Dodgeball coming soon

POTOMAC - A double elimination Dodgeball Tournament will be held at the Potomac/Greenough Community Center Feb. 2 starting at 10 a.m.  This event is a fundraiser to help the Potomac eighth grade class go to Texas for their annual eighth grade trip, now called the Capstone Trip.

A team of parents, teachers and community members are working together to make the trip a reality. There are 10 eighth graders going to Texas A&M University. One goal is for the students to learn about marine biology.

Students need to raise at least $10,000 but parent volunteer Beth Copenhaver said if they earn more they will be able to take advantage of some of the more intensive courses.

Copenhaver helped take on the Dodgeball Tournament with all proceeds going to the eighth grade fund. The tournament was chosen as a fundraiser because the students wanted a fun activity during the winter that could involve a community. Dodgeball has been done as a school fundraiser in the past and Copenhaver said it might become a tradition that can be carried from year to year.

Players and teams are welcome from all surrounding areas and all ages are welcome at the tournament.

The event planners are hoping to have at least 10 teams, not counting younger children teams. Players under the age of 10 will be put on teams, and friends can be grouped together!

Copenhaver said if someone wants to play but is not sure about creating a team, they could reach out to her.

Event fees are for those on a team. Cost involves $15 per person on a team with a shirt included for entries accepted by Jan. 22. Games will be the best of three and cash prizes will be awarded to the winning team.

The Potomac eighth graders will offer concessions at the event. Spectators are welcome at no cost to cheer on the teams.
