Council to examine county building code

SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley Lake Community Council will hold a forum on the building code and permitting process next Monday, Jan. 14 at the Seeley Lake Community Hall.

Klaus von Stutterheim, Council Chair, explained, “over the years we have heard many comments from constituents on this topic. We thought it would be helpful to bring together the officials who issue permits, other experts who are affected by the process and the community. We expect a large audience with plenty of questions and suggestions, so that county officials can hear where the bottlenecks are. Hopefully, constituents will also end up with a better understanding why the whole process was set up, how it works and what they can do to speed up getting permits and inspections.”

Panel members will include: Jean Curtiss (retired County Commissioner), Jamie Erbacher (County Community & Planning Services), Shannon Therriault (County Environmental Health), Steve Hutchings (County Public Works), Scott Kennedy (Realtor), Mark Williams (Builder) and Doug Anderson (retired Building Inspector).

Some of the expected topics include:

• Do we need a building code?

• How many counties in Montana have a building code?

• How long does it take on average to get a building permit?

• What is the cost for a permit and how is that determined?

• Why is the process so allegedly cumbersome?

• Are all the rules really necessary, or has the bureaucracy of the process assumed a life of its own?

• Why are people complaining that it takes so long to get a permit?

• What additional costs does the permit process add to building costs and can they be justified?

The informal part of the meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. Monday evening at the Seeley Lake Community Hall, 3248 MT Highway 83, with pizza and water. The formal meeting begins at 6 p.m.
