In a continuation of the informal survey on what foods mean Christmas:
Debbie Dillree said "Potato sausage has always been our big thing on Christmas Eve. My grandparents used to make it and after they passed away, my parents were able to buy it from a meat market in Missoula for many, many years but it shut down last year. So I'm trying to find another source so I can surprise my family this year."
Christine Migneault said prime rib is the food she thinks of at Christmas. She said she grew up on a farm. They had a big family and that was their big once-a-year treat.
Georgi Bignell associates green bean casserole with Christmas. She said, "It always tastes better on the holidays."
Randi de Santa Anna cited several foods that brought back memories of childhood Christmases. The first that came to mind was the homemade coffee cake from a recipe handed down through several generations, a recipe she continues to use today, with a few added nuts and sweet things. She also remembered her mom making cranberry bread and Chex mix and Christmas cookies.
De Santa Anna laughed when she remembered her mom also made plum pudding with brandy sauce. De Santa Anna said, "My grandmother always used to eat large quantities of that and she'd get loopy – in a sweet way. That was fun because we really didn't drink in our family."
De Santa Anna added that the new Christmas tradition she and her husband Juan have created for themselves is popcorn by the campfire.
