For whatever it’s worth, this is how I will vote when the mail ballots arrive in a couple of days:
Jon Tester for the U.S. Senate. Jon is a dirt farmer and a real Montanan. His opponent is a real estate developer from back east, who moved here recently and calls himself a rancher, although he doesn’t own any livestock. Jon Tester is the real thing.
Kathleen Williams for the U.S. House. She has worked tirelessly in the state legislature for healthcare and she keeps traveling across Montana to get input from constituents. Her opponent has voted against a healthcare bill that covers pre-existing conditions and he is not available to voters.
Rex Renk for Clerk of the Supreme Court. Rex has over 20 years’ experience as deputy clerk and is highly regarded in the legal community. His opponents have no experience and have no support in the legal community.
Lee Bridges for MT House District 92. Lee has an extraordinary ability to relate to people of all stripes and views. She will make a terrific legislator.
T.J. McDermott for Sheriff. T.J. has done an excellent job in office. His opponent has nowhere near T.J.’s qualifications.
Alex Beal for Justice of the Peace. Alex has proven highly qualified, and his opponent, the sitting judge, is an embarrassment to the judiciary.
Yes on LR-128. A small levy to continue to support the university system.
No on LR-129. Would make it harder for handicapped people to cast their vote.
Yes on I-185. Would raise tobacco taxes to continue support of Medicaid, which enables 100,000 Montanans to afford health care. The tobacco companies are spending huge amounts of money to defeat this Proposition.
Yes on I-186. Would require mining companies to not pollute ground water.
Yes on Open Space Bond. Will provide funds for many years to protect open spaces in Missoula County, mostly in rural areas. Fund money will typically be leveraged up to 9:1 with foundations, etc. who provide the lion’s share of the cost.
