SEELEY LAKE - The Seeley-Swan Blackhawks hosted the Victor Pirates for their Homecoming game Sept. 29.
The Blackhawks came out strong and put points on the board in the first 13 seconds of play. Chance Johnson received the Pirates' kickoff and returned it to the 32. From there Hunter Sokoloski was able to hit Dakota Wood on the first offensive play of the game for a 48-yard touchdown.
The Blackhawks found pay dirt once more in the first quarter when Avery Smith was able to break away for a 33-yard run. The drive started with an interception caught by Wood.
The Pirates were not about to give up. They started marching the ball down the field a couple yards at a time, regularly moving the chains. After Smith's touchdown, the Pirates took more than a dozen plays and 6 minutes off the clock marching down the field, cumulating with a touchdown.
While the Blackhawks were unable to score any points for themselves through the second and third quarters, they had some key plays that kept the Pirates at bay.
The Blackhawks' Walker McDonald came down with an interception in the Pirates end zone ending one drive while Johnson recovered a fumble and forced a punt after a third down tackle for a huge loss to end two more drives.
In the third quarter, the Blackhawks and their fans surely grew weary of the announcer saying, "Chavez up the middle for 5 yards" and "Chavez with 4 up the middle" over and over again. The Blackhawks found a way to plug up the line and squeeze the life out of the Pirates running game.
The Blackhawks were able to go back to work pushing down the field with a combination of runs and passes. Sokoloski was finally able to break the dry spell in the fourth quarter scoring on an 8-yard run.
A blocked punt by McDonald set the Blackhawks up for a second touchdown in the fourth quarter. Nate Samuli scored this time on a 6-yard run and ran for the two-point conversion as well.
The final score was 26-6.
The Blackhawks now head to Superior to take on the Clark Fork Coop Oct. 5 with kickoff at 7 p.m.
