Fall burning open with permit

MISSOULA - Wildland fire officials with the Missoula County Fire Protection Association (MCFPA) have dropped fire danger within Missoula County from high to moderate. Fall burning is now open for those with a permit.

Recent days have seen lower temperatures, higher relative humidity and widespread precipitation is forecasted for this coming week. Because of this, MCFPA officials have decided to open Fall Burning Oct. 1 – Nov. 30.

Fall Burning is available only to those with Essential Agricultural and Prescribed Wildland Permits. In the fall, burning yard waste is prohibited primarily due to smoke issues in the valley since inversions set up very strongly this time of year. Burning yard waste is allowed March 1, the start of General Burning season.

Fall permits must be activated daily either online at burnpermit.mt.gov or call 888-583-6497.

Wildland fire agencies would like to extend a large “Thank You” to the residents of Missoula County for your patience and cooperation during this fire season and for being extremely careful when engaged in activities that could start a wildfire. Please continue to be careful with your permitted fires and avoid burning on windy days. We urge archery hunters and campers to make sure their warming fires are cold to the touch and dead-out before being left unattended.
