All you need is love

You may be old enough to remember that song by the Beatles. It was released in 1967 as a single and quickly swept the world.

Just for fun I “Googled” the question “How many songs have been written with love in the title?” I did not receive a good answer. There was one person that counted the “love” songs in his collection and it came to 1,187…quite a large number for one person.

As a society we use the word love to describe many emotions, events, persons, animals, etc. The list is endless. I want to share with you the true meaning of the word love. It is stated in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.”

The world has never experienced a greater love and it will never be surpassed. Think about it, the God of the Universe sent his son to earth and sacrificed Him on the Cross of Calvary. Jesus bore once and forever the sins of the world as the final sacrifice for all mankind. To receive eternal life all you have to do is to repent of your sins and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. WHAT A GIFT OF LOVE!! It will never be equaled in any way!

Jesus made it very clear on numerous occasions that “love” is a very important command in our Christian faith. Here are a couple:

I Corinthians 13:13 “Now these three remain: Faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

Galatians 5:14 “The entire law is summed up in a single command: Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Luke 6:27 “Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you.”

Jesus is not talking about the type of love that comes from Hollywood. He is talking about a love that is so great you will be willing to DIE for your friend.

John 13:15 says, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” That is quite a profound statement and certainly makes it clear the type of love that Jesus is referring to.

Do you really love your enemies? It you did they probably wouldn’t be an enemy. Not everyone is easy to love but with prayer and the help of Jesus you can overcome obstacles you previously thought were impenetrable. Give it a try.

There is a Christian song with the title, “They Will Know We Are Christians By Our Love”. That is absolutely true and the goal we should strive for daily. Don’t forget, Jesus engaged the difficult people during His ministry on earth and we should do the same.

In closing, I want to remind you of the very special love that Jesus has for you. One of the last statements Jesus uttered on the cross was “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” How is that for love!!
