More than Just a Number

SLE Eighth Grade Graduation

SEELEY LAKE – Twenty eighth grade students graduated from Seeley Lake Elementary June 5. Amid all of the thanks and gratitude to teachers, family and friends that have supported the students a long the way, eighth grade Crystal Lopez highlighted some of the things that makes SLE so special, that many take for granted.

Speakers Sariah Maughan, Sara Stevenson and Tara Cahoon thanked their teachers for their patience, for dealing with them and for teaching throughout their elementary school career. They were especially grateful to their sixth grade teacher Sharon Teague. While it was a really tough year they had a lot of fun and really came into their own.

"So we just want to say thank you to all the teachers here at SLE and goodbye," they said in unison.

Hannah Ayers, Aspen Derry, Sariah Maughan and Clara Treser received the President's Education Award, for maintaining at least a 3.8 grade point average for both their seventh and eighth grade years.

The Teacher's Choice Award was given to Cierra Hinchey. She was recognized for being a positive role model, helpful, considerate and thoughtful in their interactions with other staff members and students. She also displayed thoughtful and considerate citizenship.

Tegan Mauldin received the Cliff Nelson Award. She overcame obstacles and has strived to do her best in all school and related activities. She showed a depth of character and perseverance which turned her into a responsible adult.

Crystal Lopez, also known as number 456086 at the school she attended prior to SLE, gave the farewell speech. While she received her eighth grade diploma with 19 fellow students at SLE, at her old school she was among 446 classmates.

Lopez highlighted that before class even started, students have interacted with at least a half a dozen adults and their fellow students. Once in class, attendance is taken on a first-name basis. She pointed out the strengths of the junior high teachers that push each student towards success.

"Together is a word that represents SLE," said Lopez who then highlighted many of the opportunities and staff that add to the experience at SLE. "It is this togetherness that student number 456086 would have never felt outside of Seeley Lake. However Crystal Lopez feels beyond fortunate to have become a part of the SLE family."
