Boys Take Top Spot at Western C Divisional Meet

FRENCHTOWN - The Seeley-Swan Boys won the Western C Divisional track meet May 17-18. The Boys earned 74 team points to propel them past second place Manhattan Christian with 66 points. The Girls earned 46 points for fifth out of the 18 teams represented. More than a dozen Blackhawks will compete at the State C meet May 24-26 in Great Falls.

The Boys’ top individual points earner was Logan Maughan. He won the 800 and 1600-meter with his season best times of 2:01.77 and 4:43.89 minutes. He also earned a spot at the state meet in the 400, finishing in 52.76 seconds for third.

Logan Robinson advanced to state, taking third in the 200 and fourth in the 100-meter while Hunter Shelmerdine punched his ticket with a second in the 400-meter and fifth in the triple jump. Shelmerdine’s 400 time was his personal record of 51.69 seconds.

Rounding out the individuals advancing, Nate Samuli finished fourth in the javelin and Caleb Maughan finished fifth in the high jump.

Both the Boys 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams had already earned a trip to state but that didn’t stop them from decimating the competition at the divisional meet. The 4x100 team consisting of Robinson, Shelmerdine, Cameron Haines and Dakota Wood ran their fastest time this year at 44.82 seconds, less than one second off the current school record. The 4x400 with Robinson, Shelmerdine, Wood and Logan Maughan also took first with a time of 3:29.04 minutes, finishing nearly 10 seconds ahead of second place.

For the Girls, Klaire Kovatch and Terra Bertsch were the top points earners. Kovatch threw 127 feet 4 inches for second place in the discus and earned a spot at state in the 300-meter hurdles with a third place finish. She had already auto qualified for discus earlier in the season.

Bertsch set a new personal record of 9 feet in the pole vault, earning second and took third in the high jump. She had already qualified for state in both events.

Lily Mercer ran her season best time in the 400-meter of 1:01.97 minutes, finishing in third and earning a trip to state. Though she finished in seventh at the divisional meet, Ashley Miller will join the others at state in the triple jump because she beat the auto qualifying distance at the district meet.

The Girls 4x100 relay team of Madison Hinchey, Aspen Conley, Lulu Bohlman and Mercer finished fourth with a time of 52.70 seconds. Bethany Hoag and Kovatch joined Bohlman and Mercer for the 4x400 finishing in 4:20.53 minutes for third. Both relay teams had their fastest times of the season and are headed to the state meet.
