Seeley Lake Ranger District Campgrounds Open for Memorial Day Weekend

SEELEY LAKE - – The seasonal opening of campgrounds on the Seeley Lake Ranger District will take place May 25 for Memorial Day weekend. All campgrounds except Big Larch Campgrounds will be available for public use. However, Big Larch’s boat ramp, reservable group campsites and the day use area will be open for public use.

The District received an unusually high amount of snowfall this winter and some campgrounds were heavily impacted by downed trees. Recreation crews on the Seeley Lake Ranger District have worked hard to get the campgrounds prepped for Memorial Day weekend.

Big Larch Campground will remain closed until further notice due to hazardous forest conditions and concerns for public safety. The campground is experiencing a high amount of dead and dying Douglas-fir trees due to root disease and Douglas-fir beetle. The District is actively planning to treat forest conditions and re-open the campground as soon as possible. Hazards in the boat ramp, group sites and day use area have been mitigated for public safety.

Visitors are encouraged to stay at other campgrounds on the District with similar amenities including River Point, Seeley Lake and Lake Alva Campgrounds.

Starting May 21, District personnel will continue with removal of dead and dying trees in Lake Alva Campground that was started last season. The Lake Alva Campground is located approximately 11 miles north of Seeley Lake and situated on the east shore of Lake Alva.

Work will likely be completed by the end of the week but may continue the following week. Work at the campground will be done in phases, so that campsites are always available to the public. No work will occur over Memorial Day Weekend and the campground will be open for public use.

“We appreciate the patience and understanding of the public while work is completed in Big Larch and Lake Alva Campgrounds,” said Katie Knotek, Seeley Lake Recreation Staff. “Our objective is to treat hazardous forest conditions and create a safer camping environment for our Forest users.”
