I know our minds are all on the high floodwaters, the obstructed roadways, and flooded homes, but looking at the long game, I see a very vibrant Spring season for foliage and fire fuels. If we get a dry period this summer, that will be prime dry fuel for fire season.
I urge everyone in the Potomac area to attend the Potomac Community Wildfire Preparedness Event at the Potomac Community Center on Tuesday, May 22, from 6-8 p.m. There will be a community BBQ and showing of the documentary, Era of Megafires, by Dr. Paul Hessburg.
The Era of Megafires is a 60-minute long film accompanied by a Q&A session with local fire experts sponsored by the Blackfoot Fire Protection Association, Montana DNRC, Greenough-Potomac Volunteer Fire Dept. and the Blackfoot Challenge. Please make the time in your schedule to attend. This documentary is very educational in describing our wildfire history, what we’ve done over the past 100 years and options we have going forward.
Remember, when Montanans work together, we get stuff done for the good of our communities as seen with the volunteer efforts to sandbag and help our neighbors. Let’s continue this discussion with educating ourselves on wildland fires...it’s the rural, forested environment we love and live in.
