Wallenburn Responds to Spence's Questions

SEELEY LAKE - Mr. Spence hit the nail on the head. There is a lot of false information regarding the sewer and his article in the April 26th Letters to the Editor is a prime example.

His first question is “How is that [Placid Lake algae bloom] possibly caused by Seeley Lake septic systems?” No one who reads and writes English could honestly misinterpret my comments to make that claim. But those are Mr. Spence’s own words that, I believe, are meant to intentionally deceive the readers of this newspaper and the voters within the Sewer District. SHAME ON YOU, Mr. Spence.

His second question is, “what has been so greatly accomplished by the current board?” First and foremost is that they have cumulatively devoted 40+/- years of volunteer service to develop a sound plan for a sewer system and a tremendous amount of financial assistance. They stepped up and volunteered for what has to be one of the most thankless jobs in the community. It’s easy to criticize what someone else has done, but the challenge is to come up with a better plan. No one has done that in 26 years.

His third question is, “who is the “WE” that she keeps saying needs the sewer system?” That’s a rather ignorant question and one that a knowledgeable candidate for the Sewer Board shouldn’t have to ask. But I’ll answer anyway. The ‘WE’ is everyone who lives in this area and relies on the standard of living that the local economy supports; the same standard of living that would be lost if ‘WE’ lose tourism revenue due to contamination of our lakes.

This issue is bigger than the Sewer District. The sewer will not solve all of our water pollution problems. It is, however, a major part of the solution. Because the “WE” who will benefit from the sewer is greater than the individuals within the sewer district, ‘WE” all need to share in the cost of the sewer. This should be another goal of the Sewer District Board.

Are there failed septics in the Sewer District? Yes. Are there failed septics outside the Sewer District? Yes. Including in the Double Arrow? Yes. Are those failed septics, all of them, contaminating our ground water? Yes. Will the proposed sewer system greatly reduce the contamination of our ground water? Yes. Is it a 100% solution to all of our water quality problems? No. Is it a solution to a major part of our water quality problems? Yes.

For the benefit of the entire Seeley Lake community, please vote for the incumbents, Mike Lindemer, Bob Skiles and Mark Butcher. They have done a thankless job that no one else wanted to do, until now. Those who now want the job don’t have a plan, let alone a better plan.

I challenge ‘US’ to come up with a plan to share the cost of the sewer fairly across the entire community since we will all benefit from it.
