MCPS Board Receives Smart School 2020 Bond Update

SEELEY LAKE – The Missoula County Public Schools Board of Trustees met for their April meeting April 25 at Seeley-Swan High School. SSHS Principal Dr. Kathleen Pecora provided an update for SSHS happenings for this spring. The board members also received a budget update on all projects underway as part of the Smart School 2020 bond passed by voters in November 2015.

Two SSHS staff members, a paraprofessional and two students attended Stanford University April 20-22 and took part in the Challenge Success program. They did not send anyone in the fall because of the fire.

SSHS introduced a new computer-based college and career readiness technology solution program called Naviance. Pecora said it aligns students’ strengths with their interests. The program offers several modules including college prep, ACT prep, community service, academic planning and career exploration based on their interest inventory.

Pecora said they will continue to utilize this program as well as a new program, ‘School Connect’ for the freshman class. These programs will be offered every Wednesday for a 45-minute period.

“This will serve as a point of transition for our freshman,” said Pecora.

School Connect offers several modules including: how to take notes, relationship building with teachers and peers.

“We felt the need to go to this type of program because our freshmen need this information,” said Pecora. “We think we are on a pretty good roll here to get things done for our students.”

MCPS Trustees received a budget update on the SmartSchools bond passed in November 2015.

All school projects are on schedule to be complete by September 2020, with nine major construction projects in process during the summer of 2018 at Hellgate and Sentinel High schools, Willard Alternative High School Program, Washington Middle school, Meadow Hill Middle school, Russell, Jeannette Rankin, Lewis and Clark and Hawthorne Elementary schools.
