Local Schools Celebrate Music in Our Schools Month

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley-Swan High School Band and Choir joined with the Seeley Lake Elementary and Swan Valley School Bands Wednesday, March 21 to celebrate Music in Our Schools Month® (MIOSM®).

The National Association officially designated March for Music Education for the observance of MIOSM®. The purpose of MIOSM® is to raise awareness of the importance of music education for all children – and to remind citizens that schools is where all children should have access to music. MIOSM® is an opportunity for music teachers to bring their music programs to the attention of the school and the community, and to display the benefits that school music brings to students of all ages.

During the concert, Music Director Kristen Cottom brought all the high school musicians on stage and read a list of activities in which the students participate. This was an opportunity to highlight to the younger students and the community that they can be a part of music while still playing sports, volunteering in their community and maintaining a high grade point average.

After the high school ensembles shared three selections, the Swan Valley and Seeley Lake Elementary bands joined for the "William Tell Overture." In one final combination, the high school band joined the middle schoolers closing the concert with "Dark Odyssey."
