POTOMAC - Sausages, coffee and eggs were hot, pancakes were flipping and conversation was buzzing during the first annual partnered "Pancakes and Permits" event at the Potomac/Greenough Community Center (PGCC) Feb 24.
The Greenough/Potomac Volunteer Fire Department (GPVFD) usually hosts a pancake breakfast in late February where attendees can get their burn permits and fire extinguishers filled while eating together and socializing.
This year the hosting change occurred due to the GPVFD reaching out to the Potomac Valley 4H club about using the large propane grills for their cooking.
The 4H club agreed on the use of the grills and extended an invitation to assist in the event, which was met with open arms. This helped fulfill their yearly community service requirements.
Both sides benefited. The 4H club members who helped can check 'community service' off their 4H to-do list and the GPVFD could fully focus on burn permits and fire extinguishers and cooking the eggs in the egg tent.
GPVFD Chief Ryan Hall said, "The 4H kids and grills were awesome because it allowed us to spread out the cooking area and we kept ahead of the crowd with the extra cooking help."
More than 70 community members attended, which is comparable to previous years. Hall said extinguisher filling numbers were up and burn permit numbers were down.
