The Adventure Never Stopped

SEELEY LAKE – Seeley Lake Elementary junior high students followed in the footsteps of Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn. In their production of "Huck Finn's High-Tailin' Adventures" adapted by Susan Pargman, students lit up the stage with their antics and, truth be told, got themselves out of many predicaments with a lie.

SLE Drama Class taught by Duane Schlabach was an elective. Students auditioned for their parts and practiced for the past two months to put on a matinee for the students and then an evening performance for parents and the community Jan. 17.

Sharon Teague's elective class designed the set and all the props for the performance. This was the second year for the class. They extended the curtains out so there was more room behind stage. Schlabach felt they really outdid themselves this year.

Main characters Ava Thornsberry played the legendary Huckleberry Finn and Hannah Ayers played the slave Jim. Both agreed the biggest challenge was memorizing all of their lines.

"There was a lot of improv," said Ayers and laughed.

When she auditioned, Ayers wanted the part of Jim. "There was multiple emotions I needed to show," said Ayers.

She said Schlabach gave each character a lot of freedom to develop their character. She did a lot of trial and error during practice to see what worked and what didn't on stage with her classmates.

"It was a lot of fun," said Ayers. "For a certain period of time you can be anything you want."

"It took a lot of determination and hard work," wrote Thornsberry. "The best part was acting with my friends."
