SEELEY LAKE - Response to this summer’s fires showed the resilience of people living in Seeley Lake. It is not something any of us want to see repeated.
We all know how important Seeley Lake is to the community and local economy. Our forests became at risk due to decades of fire suppression and delays in thinning. The lake could suffer a similar fate.
I was fortunate to serve as Director of the Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks during the 1990s. Over my career, I came to appreciate that many of the challenges that nature faced were not the result of a single action; they were the result of many small acts over years.
Our families have been lucky to have a small cabin on Seeley Lake for nearly 60 years. That’s why we are supporting building a sewer system now, while it is still affordable. It will demonstrate the resolve of the community to ensure the quality of the lake today and years to come. It will allow investment in housing for workers at the mill and other businesses the community needs to thrive.
It is a tough time following this summer to ask people to support building a sewer system, yet with the fires fresh in our minds, it is strong reminder of how important our connection to forests and the lake are to the economy and our quality of life.
Just as neighbors have always helped neighbors, our families are helping by encouraging people from out of town to buy quilting materials. We are contributing to the Seeley Lake Foundation to help those in need. We are encouraging people to “buy Seeley and visit Seeley” because this area and the people here mean so much to us.
That’s what neighbors do.
