Despite Slow Start, Eagles Find Their Wings

SEELEY LAKE – The Seeley Lake Elementary Eagles are playing well and having fun despite a shortened season due to the smoke. They have won their last two games and are looking forward to a rematch against Hellgate Elementary on their home field. Hellgate Elementary is the only team that has taken the Eagles down.

"We are salvaging our season. The other kids are ahead of us a little bit but we are happy to be playing," said Head Coach Brett Haines. "The kids are excited about it and they are doing some great things."

The first game the Eagles lost to Hellgate Elementary 6-16.

"We had the opportunity to score one more touchdown in that game but it slipped through our fingers," said Haines. "We were pretty rusty."

The second game of the season the Eagles beat Philipsburg. The game was tied 6-6 at the end so they did a play off. Both teams scored again in the playoff but it was the Stout-to-Stout connection for the win. Wyatt Stout passed to his brother Johnnie for the two-point conversion points bringing the score 14-12 Eagles.

"It was a great game," said Haines. "Both teams played hard."

The Eagles took on Clinton on the Seeley-Swan High School field, Oct. 4.

The Eagles were all business right from the start. Sean Mercado recovered their kickoff, setting up great field position for an early touchdown. Though Clinton fired right back with a long pass and touchdown, the Eagles held them scoreless the rest of the half. The Eagles racked up two more touchdowns from Johnnie Stout and Owen Hoag to take a 14-point advantage into the second half.

Much like the first half, the Eagles were on fire. Hoag returned Clinton's kickoff 63 yards for a touchdown. Mercado scored his second touchdown and Wyatt Stout returned an interception 22 yards for a touchdown before the end of the third quarter.

Though the Eagles were scoreless through the fourth quarter, they held Clinton to just one touchdown for a final score of 38-14.

Haines said the older kids played well and he was able to substitute in some of the younger players. He was impressed with the number of interceptions.

"We really played the passes well," said Haines. "We gave up a touchdown early but then defense got in a rhythm and got going. Then our offense got going as well."

The Eagles have a rematch with Hellgate Elementary Monday Oct. 16. This will be the next home game and final game of the season.
