I have a sign by my cabin door that sez, “I’d rather be lost in the woods then found at home.”
All these years lost from the Out ‘N The Woods column made me think what a college professor said to me when I quit writing. Sez he, “Your column made me so angry sometimes but I’m sure going to miss it.”
Anyway, I’ll give it a hit and miss try again. So here goes.
I don’t know about other places but here in our cabin it’s an infestation. I’ve caught at least 25 mice along the outside cabin wall. And once in a while one inside this summer.
Then that sneaky varmint, Mr. Skunk shows up. Look’n for the dead mice I tossed out into the horse corral. I’ll have to take drastic measures, set a live trap up in the woods and displace him (or her) with the .22. From a distance of course. The best way is to cover the trap with canvas. They won’t spray what they can’t see.
And now the pack rats are look’n for a winter home. We have caught upwards of a 100 – the gospel trust, in about 12 years. Ask anyone that’s lived near Lake Mary Ronan. They’ll give you the smelly scoop. There’s a reason the vehicles around here all set with their hoods up. They’re sure cute little buggers but are destructive.
Meanwhile down at the barn, the chipmunks and squirrels were drowning in the horse tanks. So I tossed a pole in there so they can climb out.
Yup, it’s the year of the varmint!
