Once-In-A-Lifetime Opportunity

SEELEY LAKE - A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity is just that: a possible event which offers enormous gain but will never be re-offered and if not seized will leave decades of regret in its wake.

The federal government, whose purse strings are rapidly closing, is offering Seeley Lake a $8,000,000 (!) grant, the largest award ever to any community, to construct a sewer system. This will solve a problem that threatens the very economy and way-of-life of Seeley Lake: ancient septic systems are contaminating our ground water and polluting our beloved lake. You can see the evidence yourself in the algae that spread more with each year.

The sewer system would solve a multitude of problems besides allowing our groundwater to renew itself: affordable housing, a critical issue in Seeley, would be much more feasible to construct, because the lot sizes could be smaller. New construction costs would be lower because no expensive septic system would be required. Homeowners, whose septic system fail, wouldn’t have to pay the cost of the very high-end replacement systems required by health regulations now. And of course the construction phase would generate additional jobs and business.

Like with any major project there is some criticism: Yes, the district needs to be enlarged and eventually include Dogtown and the riverfront cabins but that can easily be done at a later stage.

In the meantime we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that we must not let slip through our fingers to have the bulk of the sewer’s costs gifted to us.

Please support the sewer system and protect our cherished lake and our beautiful landscape, fish and wildlife.
