VICTOR - The Rice Ridge Fire continued to put a damper on the Seeley-Swan Blackhawks football season. The smoke lifted enough to take on the Pirates in Victor Sept. 9.
The evacuation order of a large part of Seeley Lake Aug. 28, including the high school, forced the team to cancel their home game with Troy. The smoke has been wreaking havoc on their practice schedule all season.
Blackhawks Head Coach Ryan Sokoloski said that the team hasn't had a full practice in more than two weeks. The fact that several athletes are living in hazardous air has limited how hard they can work even when they do get into fresh air.
Sokoloski remains optimistic that the team will be able to start practicing on their home field sooner than later.
Despite those odds, Sokoloski said the Blackhawks played well against Victor in the execution of plays and had several big stops.
The Blackhawks held the Pirates to a single touchdown in each of the first two quarters and a pair of touchdowns in the third. They finally were able to put up some points in the final quarter and kept the Pirates at bay for a final score of 8-30.
The Blackhawks next game is at home against Twin Bridges, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. providing the smoke has cleared. The Homecoming parade and dance have been postponed.
